Classification of upper limb prostheses

The upper limb prosthesis is an auxiliary device used after the amputation of the upper limb, which can compensate for the defective limb and compensate for part of the function of the upper limb. Upper limb prostheses can be functionally divided into myoelectric prostheses, cosmetic prostheses and mechanical prostheses.

Mechanical upper limb
The mechanical upper limb is a prosthetic limb that controls and completes some upper limb compensatory functions through its own power source. It controls the opening and closing of the upper limb prosthetic hand and the flexion and extension of the elbow joint through the stretching and displacement of external auxiliary equipment such as straps and ropes. a series of actions.

EMG upper limb
Myoelectric upper limbs rely on the EMG signals emitted by the amputee’s residual limb muscles. By amplifying the EMG signals, the operation of the arm is controlled, so that the EMG upper limbs can complete the opening and closing of the hand, the rotation of the wrist, and a function of flexion and extension of the elbow joint. The upper limb prosthesis is easy to use, and the control method is similar to that of a real hand.

Cosmetic prosthesis
The main function of cosmetic upper limbs is to fill the gaps. It can imitate the passive movement of each joint of the upper limbs. The cosmetic prosthesis has a simple structure, light weight, and similar touch and appearance to real hands.

The difference between myoelectric upper extremity and cosmetic upper extremity
Both myoelectric upper limbs and cosmetic upper limbs can make up for the missing parts of the upper limbs, but the main function of the beauty hand is to fill the gap and be beautiful, and the structure is simple and light in weight. Therefore, in terms of aesthetics, cosmetic prostheses exceed myoelectric prostheses; and myoelectric prostheses. The main purpose is to achieve part of the function, it can compensate for the original missing part of the function. But the aesthetics are weaker than the upper limbs, and the weight is heavier.

The prosthetic hand sometimes opens and closes uncontrollably, why?
During the use of the myoelectric prosthesis, because the user’s muscle strength and EMG signal will continue to increase, the previously debugged EMG signal amplifier will be too sensitive, so there will be some uncontrolled movements, please ask professional a fine-tuning, you can return to normal use.
